The Julia Rausing Trust backs Londoner Bursary for young people

On behalf of our Bursary cofunders, Hymans Robertson Foundation is delighted to announce that The Julia Rausing Trust is supporting the new Londoner Bursary that will launch later this year- a major step in a growing city-based bursary programme.

The three-year award will help establish the Londoner Bursary from the outset, contributing to the early funding needed to open the programme to young people in London who are facing financial hardship or barriers to education, training, employment and personal development.  

Now in its third year, the city based bursary approach started with the Wee Bursary in Glasgow in 2023 and has since grown into a place-based model to include Birmingham and Edinburgh, with the Foundation working with other grant managers to make small grants available to young people most in need. 

Bursaries of up to £300 can help with essential costs such as food, clothing, travel, IT equipment, data access, learning materials, identification documents, wellbeing support and other development costs. For many young people, this small but timely support can remove a practical barrier and help them move into, or remain in, a positive destination. 

I got clothing vouchers. This helped me so much as it meant I could go out and buy myself new clothes and trainers. I was embarrassed at the clothes I was wearing to school and it was making me anxious to come to school. Once I got my new trainers and jacket, I felt a lot more confident and it made me feel so good.

This significant backing from The Julia Rausing Trust will build upon a growing funders network supporting young people in London (initially in 5 borough areas) with practical, dignified support. The Foundation looks forward to working with The Julia Rausing Trust, expanding on the collaborative, place-based approach already making a difference for young people in Glasgow, Birmingham, and Edinburgh.
